Railcar current collector shoes are subject to a harsh environment and must be in good condition and accurately positioned to obtain good traction performance.

The MRX Collector Shoe Monitoring system (CSMS) is a trackside system that utilises vision components to provide a 3-D model of the shoe, from which the wear and orientation parameters can be measured.

The system will perform the following:

 

  • Determine the location of all shoes on a train
  • Detect the absence of a shoe
  • Measure the profile of the shoe
  • Determine the height and tilt of each shoe with respect to a datum
  • Determine the lateral displacement and skew of each shoe with respect to a datum

The systems provide following benefits:

  • Detection of poorly set up shoes to reduce risk of damage
  • Detection of missing shoes
  • Ability to extend component life by replacing shoes on condition rather than distance traveled or time.
