In order to fully understand and be able to model dynamic behaviour of heavy haul trains, it is sometimes necessary to carry out data logging of an actual train in operation. Instrumentation Investigation involves the placement of sensors and data loggers on several rail cars in a train in order to measure different parameters as the train travels a particular route. The sensors pick up information on various systems such as brake pneumatic pressure, coupler forces, train speed, locomotive notch position etc which is then recorded together with track location data.
The data is analysed to determine the actual train dynamic behaviour and used to modify, tune and validate train models for simulation predictions. This aspect of our consulting work provides a means of design loop closure that may be required in certain critical applications such as cruise control.
